ADM Streamlines Global Operations with Onit

Challenge: Fragmented, Manual Legal Operations in a Global Enterprise

As one of the world’s leading agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) operates in a highly complex, global environment. Its Legal Affairs, Regulatory & Compliance (LARC’) department manages a vast portfolio of Litigation, Regulatory, Compliance, Commercial, and other matters globally. ADM needed a centralized, flexible platform that could simplify LARC operations, standardize procedures, reduce manual burdens, increase transparency, and accountability across regions.

Enabling Scalable, Automated Legal Operations at Enterprise Speed

Since adopting Onit in 2015, ADM has continually expanded its use of the platform, validating its long-term enterprise fit. Onit’s low-code, highly configurable and rapid deployment model (powered by Apptitude) has enabled ADM to create hundreds of purpose-built workflows that support the evolving needs of its LARC function and the broader business.

Today, with over 18,000 users globally, Onit acts as ADM LARC’s system of record and reporting. Its adaptability empowers LARC and business users alike to automate workflows, drive innovation, and reduce dependency on IT and other technologies. ADM’s continued investment in Onit is a testament to the platform’s scalability, reliability, adaptability and ability to deliver real-world outcomes across a global LARC ecosystem.

Key Components and Use Cases

  • Contract Lifecycle Automation: NDA intake and auto-creation with an integration with Docusign has eliminated human intervention and reduced turnaround time from weeks to hours, drastically improving speed and eliminating bottlenecks.
  • Legal Service Request (‘LSR”) has increased business user transparency and enabled the Legal team to get the right resource working on the request automatically and immediately.
  • Compliance and Risk & Controls Workflows: Automated processes from Conflict-of-Interest review and approval to Quarterly Disclosure certifications.
  • Attorney Management & Internal Approvals: ADM developed custom tools for LARC employee onboarding, Association Management, Budget approval, Law Firm RFP & Preapproval, Engagement Letter creation & execution and HR-Employment Law workflow streamlining what were once time-consuming, manual processes.
  • Bond and insurance certificate processes: Previously fragmented, manual and involving internal and external parties are now automated both eliminating multiple steps in the complex workflows and making them completely self-service. Now it is centralized into structured, automated processes with full visibility and audit trails.
  • Real Estate Process Management: A robust project management and workflow tracking tool that manages the process for buying, selling, and leasing real property from the initial need to final execution and transfer to lease management company.
  • Data-Driven Iteration: ADM leverages MVP-style app builds to gather usage insights and iterate with precision—ensuring automation efforts to align tightly with actual business needs.
