Overview

Since their introduction in the mid-1990s, legal e-billing systems have used a traditional message-based, store and forward system - essentially files are uploaded by the firm to a third party application and imported into the law department’s matter or spend management system. This is a model that emulates traditional EDI technologies developed during World War II and commercialized shortly thereafter.

With all the advances in legal technology, you will likely find it astonishing that traditional legal e-billing systems continue to use this store and forward approach. Law firms and law departments remain virtually disconnected around the important financial documents and business component of their relationship.

Until now, there’s been no way for law departments and their law firms to have a shared workspace in which to get and stay on the “same page” when it comes to open matters, timekeeper rates, budgets, and invoices.

E-billing Dashboard

With the release of Onit’s BillingPoint service, law firms and law departments can now take advantage of the first real innovation in legal e-billing in more than 20 years. BillingPoint was designed from the ground-up by experts in legal e-billing - the founders of Datacert - Eric M. Elfman and Eric Smith. Building on their experience and leveraging the Onit App Builder platform, Onit has developed the first truly collaborative workspace that enables law firms and law departments to share real-time information that is essential to their financial relationship.

BillingPoint’s powerful capabilities will significantly enhance how you manage, track and collaborate on the work you send to outside counsel. It will also help you reduce your legal spend with more efficiency and effectiveness. BillingPoint is fully integrated with Onit’s state-of-the-art matter management Apps, or can be easily integrated with your existing matter management system.

How It Works

Onit’s E-billing App allows third parties such as law firms and other vendors to submit invoices securely to the corporate legal department for review and payment. The App tracks and manages every dollar of your legal spend so you can better manage your legal operations.

Business rules can be configured to provide automated review for compliance errors and routing for approval. The App also provides comprehensive audit invoice review that stands up to internal and external compliance requirements.
