Onit’s President to Judge the 13th Annual Rice University Business Plan Competition

HOUSTON, TX — (MARKETWIRE) — 04/12/13 — Onit, a leading provider of business productivity and process management Apps, today announced that its President Eric M. Elfman will once more serve as a judge for the Rice University Business Plan Competition. This will be the 12th year that he has served in this capacity for the competition, which is the world’s richest and largest graduate-level business plan competition.

Hosted and organized by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, the competition has grown from nine teams competing for $10,000 in prize money in 2001 to 42 teams from around the world vying for more than $1.3 million in cash and prizes.

In the start-up world, entrepreneurs often have to solicit the resources to finance their businesses. The competition mirrors this process by inviting the entrepreneurs to “pitch” their business plans and vision to the judges. The judges then grade each presentation as if they were venture capital investors themselves. The winner of the competition is the business that the judges would most likely invest in based on the quality of the idea, the strength of the management team and the clarity and persuasiveness of the written plan and oral presentation.

“Competitions such as these are invaluable sources of experience and growth for up-and-coming businesses,” said Elfman. “As a serial entrepreneur myself, I understand the business focus and vision necessary to grow a successful venture.”

The judges, usually members of the investment community or involved in early-stage investment decisions on a consistent basis, review and rank business plans through three rounds throughout the three-day competition. Winners are designated based on the judges’ willingness to invest in a business based on an evaluation of the written business plan and a verbal presentation.

Onit Unveils 10 Legal Apps at LegalTech(R) New York 2013

NEW YORK, NY — (MARKETWIRE) — 01/29/13 — Onit, a leading provider of business productivity and process management Apps, today announced that it unveiled 10 Legal Apps at LegalTech New York 2013. Onit is sponsoring the Cyber Café on the 3rd floor of the Hilton New York and will be offering a two-week trial of two Legal Apps to LegalTech New York attendees.

“Onit Apps for Legal streamline processes within legal, and across all departments, business units and divisions that interact with them, to achieve complete transaction visibility,” commented Eric M. Elfman, CEO of Onit. “Too many processes are manual and paper-intensive, handled with email, Word documents or Excel spreadsheets. We’re excited to show LegalTech attendees a variety of Legal Apps that are simple to use and easy to deploy so business users can reduce the time it takes to get work completed.”

Onit Apps for Legal are highly configurable, flexible and do not require significant IT time or an expensive investment. In fact, a user can start using one of our pre-configured Legal Apps in five minutes. In thirty minutes, a user can configure one of our 10 Onit Apps for Legal to suit their specific needs. In 60 minutes, a user can completely define and deliver a new custom Onit App to automate processes with the Onit App Builder.

Below are the 10 Legal Apps Onit will be demonstrating at the tradeshow:

  • ReviewAI & Approval App
The Onit ReviewAI & Approval App takes your broken, manual and time-consuming contracting process and automates it. No longer will your staff have to search their inbox or hard drive for the latest version or keep an Excel spreadsheet to track their contracts. With the Onit ReviewAI & Approval App, you can compress your revenue cycle, improve supplier and vendor relationships, achieve higher contract compliance rates, and mitigate risks by having fewer contractual exceptions and increase internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Contract Administration App
The Onit Contract Administration App lets you easily manage contracts and business documents in one central location. Contract administrators typically have very little control or visibility into the contract lifecycle. The Onit Contract Administration App eliminates this problem and provides administrative insight that is not possible when using spreadsheets or email.
  • Matter Management App
The Onit Matter Management App organizes all of your company’s legal information — from documents to emails, to invoices for outside counsel, time spent by employees, deadlines and dockets. Your team will have immediate access to critical matter, financial and performance metrics through simple information collection, management and workflow.
  • E-hold Management App
The Onit E-hold Management App reduces risks, simplifies compliance and lowers administrative overhead. If your organization is managing custodians with a spreadsheet, it is time to stop. Onit makes it easy to create holds, send hold notifications and ensure acknowledgment.
  • NDA Request App
The Onit NDA Request App lets you provide better customer service, reduce cycle time and drive down cost. Whether providing self-service NDAs or moving third-party NDA review to a legal process outsourcer, the Onit NDA Request App is the easiest answer.
  • Collaborative Budgeting App
The Onit Collaborative Budgeting App allows you to completely organize the process of requesting, collecting, reviewing and approving budgets from outside counsel. Traditionally, a process is managed with emails and spreadsheets, requiring duplicate data entry and difficulty in managing. With the Onit Collaborative Budgeting App, it is now straightforward to request, compile and collaborate on budgets so that you can get a handle on spend forecasts and matter staffing plans.
  • Alternative Fee Arrangement Approval (AFA) App
The Onit Alternative Fee Arrangement Approval App helps pricing staff and committees manage the review and approval of AFA requests by enabling the collection of key information about the request, providing a shared workspace for discussion, collaboration and decision-making and an ability to review a history of transactions to spot trends and patterns. The AFA App simplifies the process, improves response times, replaces email and spreadsheets, and eliminates an unruly and complex process.
  • Outside Counsel Engagement App
The Onit Outside Counsel Engagement App simplifies how you manage your outside counsel while making your matter management system more valuable. It is easy for outside counsel to use and ensures that every legal matter is budgeted and that your matter management system reflects all outside work. It can also be deployed in a way that allows business users to be engaged during the retention process.
  • Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) App
Outsourcing work and the complexities of assigning work, tracking progress and reporting on service level agreements in email and spreadsheets is not efficient. The Onit Legal Process Outsourcing App allows you to manage the work through simple but robust forms, automating workflow and notifications, enabling your LPO to easily reroute transactions back into your organization when necessary. Additionally, the LPO App provides a real-time dashboard that enables you to view the status of all the transactions in your portfolio.
  • Matter Intake App
The Onit Matter Intake App is a remarkably valuable capability for law departments that have a matter management system. It helps you collect all the data necessary to get a matter opened and assigned to the right attorney. It also provides the capability to automatically acknowledge new matters and ensure that your attorneys have all the information they need to get started right away. You will see benefits as broad as distributing work more evenly, improving response times and ensuring that the data in your matter management system is as up-to-date as possible.

Legal Department Operations Roundtable to Focus on Importance and Benefits of Business Process Management

HOUSTON, TX — (MARKETWIRE) — 01/23/13 — According to Harvard Business Review contributor, consultant, and business process expert Brad Power, “The question for top management is no longer whether your organization’s processes need to be improved, but rather which ones, how much and when.”

This wisdom also applies to law department operations. On January 24, law department operations leaders will meet in Houston to discuss “Trends in Process Management: What Law Department Leaders Can Do Now.” The event, hosted by the Legal Department Operations Roundtable, will feature Brad Power, Business Process Expert, and Paul Zengilowski of Onit.

Law department executives have increasingly realized that standard tools such as email, matter or document management systems do not accommodate the work their staff attorneys manage across organizational and geographic boundaries which require enterprise-wide collaboration. As their work becomes even more global, time-sensitive and core to their company’s competitive advantage, process management has emerged as one of the most important and effective innovations Chief Legal Officers, General Counsel and Law Department Operations Leaders can pursue.

In this seminar, Power will explain the mechanics and benefits of process management for a legal department and explore new technologies that allow law departments to bypass traditional tools that normally require large investments in technology and IT infrastructure. This information and its techniques and strategies will enable corporate law departments to speed the flow of information, enable faster and better decision-making, and improve the quality of service your legal department provides to your business.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Why Process Strategy Matters to Law Departments
  • Process Strategy Best Practices
  • Leading Law Department Process Improvements
  • Technology and Process Improvements

Onit Launches Onit App Builder — Process Automation Platform Simplifies the Creation and Deployment of Apps to Streamline Internal Processes, Enhance Productivity and Optimize Operational Efficiencies

HOUSTON, TX — (MARKETWIRE) — 12/20/12 — Onit, Inc., a leading provider of business productivity and process management Apps, today announced that it launched Onit App Builder, a process automation platform that combines business process management, collaboration, and project management functionality into one innovative SaaS tool. Onit App Builder allows business users to easily develop and deploy Apps to facilitate continuous improvement of critical business processes.

Creating Apps using Onit App Builder empowers business teams to streamline internal processes, enhance visibility into transactions and improve operational efficiency that is not possible using traditional tools like email and spreadsheets. The App Builder’s flexible platform includes custom forms, fields, checklists, workflow and process tracking capabilities to allow business users to create simple-to-use Apps that address business processes such as contract review and approval, matter intake, vendor compliance, contract management, IP infringement, etc. Additionally, Onit App Builder allows organizations to solve business problems in hours or days with the flexibility to make changes and improvements in-stream as often as required.

Among a number of recent deployments of Onit App Builder, the legal department of a Fortune 100 global diversified technology and industrial leader, successfully completed a deployment of Onit App Builder. Across a number of its legal and compliance processes within its legal services group, they demonstrated that Onit App Builder delivers shorter transaction times, increased visibility into transaction status, seamless collaboration, increased risk assessment capabilities and improved compliance with business policies. Additionally, the engagement of knowledge workers across the business has improved, driving significant improvements in the execution of critical legal and business processes.

Similarly, a leading provider of technology solutions for business, government, education, and healthcare implemented Onit App Builder to deliver an improved client experience and ensure compliance with partner marketing programs. Onit App Builder will provide the capability to effectively manage a set of tasks and communication with clients to help this company drive higher enterprise license growth and renewal rates, while at the same time increasing customer satisfaction

Onit App Builder also provides a service delivery developer and process stakeholders with the following capabilities:

1. Enables Process Development with Intuitive User Interfaces. Traditional process development requires the use of process mapping software that is counter-intuitive to process stakeholders. While process maps are important, most business people simply do not find those tools intuitive. More importantly, they can’t see how processes developed in this way will improve the way they work and provide the flexibility that they need as knowledge workers to get their jobs done.

With Onit App Builder, companies now have a tool that improves engagement of knowledge workers in process development with a user interface they can understand and use. In this new paradigm, traditional process mapping moves to a back office function derived from the user interface. Business staff now enthusiastically participate in process discipline because they have the instant feedback of seeing how a process discipline will improve the way they work.

2. Short Development Time Implemented by Functional Service Groups. Onit App Builder radically reduces “time to pilot” and “time to value.” Simple process pilots can be ready for implementation in hours and in production within days.

3. Flexibility for Stakeholders. Implementation through Onit App Builder technology provides process stakeholders with the flexibility to route, comment, revise and track progress of the service to accommodate the variability and unpredictability inherent in knowledge work.

4. Standard Intuitive Interface. Applications developed through Onit App Builder provide simple intuitive interfaces with standard features that allow the user to focus on the process instead of how the application works. This means little or no training, dramatically reducing the time and cost of App deployment.

5. Standard Versus Custom Development. Onit App Builder takes the approach of fixing the process and not the problem.

6. A “Learn By Doing” Approach. The focus is on learning the optimal process through feedback from rapid deployment rather than a customized and expensive development of complex process maps and workflow design that anticipate every possible contingency that may or may not occur.

“We’re delighted to be working with these world-class companies and others like them across a broad range of industries. Their focus on process improvement has been instrumental in extending the App Builder platform as an enterprise-class process improvement platform. We have high expectations that Onit App Builder will simplify their internal processes and deliver significant benefit to their staff and customers,” commented John Gilman, Director of Products, Onit. “App Builder was designed to rationalize business processes by enabling customers to quickly and reliably solve real-world problems that directly impact customer satisfaction, employee productivity and ultimately profitability.”

Leading Law Departments Share Advantages of Good Legal Process at Inaugural Law Department Operations Roundtable

CHICAGO, IL — (MARKETWIRE) — 09/28/12 — The inaugural Law Department Operations Roundtable took place on September 10 at the headquarters of CDW in Vernon Hills, IL and included presentations from some of the leading thinkers involved in law department operations, including David Cambria of CDW, Ted Jankowski and Mark Barron of Johnson Controls and Paul Zengilowski of Onit. The session was sponsored by Onit, a leading provider of business productivity and process management Apps.

Attendees were intrigued by three presentations. Paul Zengilowski led off with a discussion of the history of law department operations, where he pointed out that chief legal officers have been facing the same two biggest challenges — managing the law department’s workload and workflow — for the past 25 years. He foreshadowed the presentations to follow by suggesting the next wave of technology innovation for law departments will look beyond traditional matter and spend management systems and be focused on process initiatives that impact client service and attorney productivity directly.

David Cambria followed with a discussion focusing on the differences between systems of record, which host processes, and systems of engagement, which touch people. Cambria explained that systems of engagement are the future of technology-led innovation involving high levels of communication amongst the most valuable workers a company possesses. He also discussed CDW’s initiative to leverage data from their system of record to improve client service, and compliance with company and partner business programs.

Finally, Ted Jankowski and Mark Barron concluded with a case study on their experience with process improvement within Johnson Controls’ legal department. JCI is currently in the execution phase of its Legal Quality Improvement Plan which was initiated in 2008. To date, they have piloted, tested or are in development on 25 Onit Apps. The legal team has seen improved lawyer and non-lawyer engagement in predictable processes that focus on results. Additionally, JCI has seen improved accountability across these transactions and enthusiastic adoption among lawyers, largely due to the simplicity and flexibility of the Apps.

“Our goal is to help law department operations managers understand the value and implications of a focus on legal process and provide them with actionable ideas they can implement right away,” said Paul Zengilowski, Onit. “David, Ted and Mark highlighted innovative, yet real-world process initiatives that are driving significant business benefits within their organizations. Their results strongly suggest that legal process improvements greatly impact operational efficiency and enhance delivery and execution capabilities of attorneys and professional staff.”

Onit plans to launch additional events under the Legal Department Operations Roundtable umbrella. For more information, please visit http://www.legaldepartmentoperations.com.

  • How cloud-based apps improve a law department’s efficiency and promote cost savings

“Due to the complexity of deploying and maintaining traditional, enterprise-level solutions, many corporate law departments are saddled with inadequate tools to manage workloads and workflows. Cloud computing offers an affordable solution that meets the unique demands of in-house counsel operations with painless deployments and simple maintenance. This session will work to acquaint legal professionals with what they need to know to take advantage of this asset,” said Elfman.

Additional panelists include Ed Cavazos, a partner with Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, and Onit Customer Development Executive Paul Zengilowski.

About Onit

Onit was formed by legal software industry experts Eric M. Elfman and Eric A. Smith, co-founders of Datacert, a leading provider of enterprise spend management software. Launched in early 2010, Onit deploys Onit Apps to simplify business process automation and improve business productivity across all departments and industries. The Onit App Builder allows business users to drive efficiency and productivity by combining business process management, project management, and information management into one easy to use tool so the user can create their own Onit Apps without having to rely on IT for support.

Businesses have processes for everything — whether it’s hiring a vendor or law firm, terminating an employee, submitting a contract for review, requesting a trademark request, obtaining an NDA, etc. Most of these processes are manual, paper intensive and cumbersome. With Onit Apps, processes are automated in a few clicks, responsible parties are notified immediately, and data collection is centralized. Onit doesn’t require any software to download or resources from IT. For more information, visit onitprostg.wpengine.com or contact 1-800-281-1330.
