Case Study

As one of the most successful Native American tribes in the United States, the Seminole Tribe of Florida manages a wide range of legal matters, from governmental and gaming law to high volumes of document requests. However, until recently, its Legal Department relied entirely on a paper-based filing system.
“Documents were everywhere, filing decisions was manual, and retrieving information was time-consuming,” said Staff Attorney Evonne Andris. “We’d spend weeks on file purges and constantly lost time navigating the subject-matter-based system that just couldn’t scale.”
With increasing caseloads and growing operational complexity, the department recognized the need for a centralized, digital legal matter management solution.
Following a six-month evaluation process focused on systems purpose-built for in-house counsel, the Seminole Tribe of Florida selected Legal Files, part of the Onit ecosystem, for its ease of use, strong implementation support, and configurable design.
Onit’s Legal Files enabled the legal team to:
Since implementing Legal Files, the Legal Department has experienced dramatic gains in efficiency and responsiveness:
File organization and purging time reduced from six weeks to one afternoon.
Improved matter visibility allows team members to instantly view status and ownership.
Faster onboarding and training enabled a full department to go-live within one month.
Proactive task management with Legal Files’ “Manage My Day” dashboard and “HeadsUp” alerts.
Custom file windows help streamline archiving and recordkeeping.
“Our efficiency has skyrocketed,” Andris said. “It’s now effortless to tell someone the status of a matter and who’s working on it—Legal Files gives us answers instantly.”
The legal team rolled out Legal Files quickly and without disruption. “We installed Legal Files in December, trained our team, and went live by January 1,” said Andris. “By the end of that month, all our 2007 open files were fully migrated. It was a seamless transition.”
Officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in 1957, the Seminole Tribe of Florida has become a symbol of innovation and economic success—launching the first tribal casino in 1979 and acquiring the global Hard Rock brand in 2006. The tribe’s legal department supports its expansive operations, including gaming, governance, and public services, and now relies on Onit’s Legal Files to manage legal work efficiently, accurately, and at scale.
