SimpleLegal (an Onit Company) Challenges the Traditional Approach to Tasks and Events with Latest Event Management Feature

Modernized event management decreases risk for legal departments where the stakes are higher for missed deadlines

HOUSTONMarch 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — SimpleLegal (an Onit company), the industry leader in easy-to-learn and implement e-Billing and matter management software, announces the launch of its purpose-built event management feature within its matter management solution.

Compared to available market options, SimpleLegal separates task and event management, functionality traditionally tied together in matter management applications. The separation draws attention to the importance of events, such as court dates, filing deadlines, and depositions, and the negative consequences when events are mismanaged.

“We all work in tools like Outlook and Google where creating a meeting, inviting the right people, and adding relevant details is simple,” says Shri Iyer, SimpleLegal’s SVP of Product Management and Design. “We set out to replicate this ease of use, designed specifically for legal departments, after our customers vocalized that deadlines are too important to be viewed as mere tasks that are checked off a list.”

When it comes to missed deadlines, the stakes are higher for legal departments. Failing to file court documents on time or overlooking statutory limits, for example, can pose significant risk to a business, potentially resulting in lawsuits, attorney sanctions, and case dismissal. The robust calendaring provided by SimpleLegal’s event management gives legal departments the centralized, matter-specific view of upcoming events that has been missing in the market. Better visibility and accountability make collaboration effortless and keep key stakeholders informed.

SimpleLegal’s event management further integrates with CalendarRules, the most comprehensive and reliable court rules platform offering over 1,800 rule sets nationwide. As the first matter management solution to offer this integration, legal departments can confidently prepare for and manage upcoming events and deadlines thanks to automated, real-time data from CalendarRules to SimpleLegal.

“After extensive research and conversations with legal ops professionals, we knew separating tasks and events was the right call. It didn’t make sense to treat a deadline-driven event the same way as a task,” shares Iyer. “To successfully and continually build value for our users, we can’t lose sight of how legal teams operate and must adapt our product accordingly.”

SimpleLegal streamlines legal operations by packaging event and task management into a single matter management solution. This unified approach enhances visibility into team capacity, supports strategic decision-making, and simplifies matter intake and management, increasing workflow efficiency and productivity.

Legal professionals can now use natural language chat to access a new, powerful level of intelligence enabled by generative AI that simplifies and automates everyday legal tasks from within their most-used productivity software — Microsoft Outlook.

“The continuous and rising demand on legal teams as the protector of the business has brought significant challenges for operational scalability. The combination of the proven OnitX platform that has hosted hundreds of workflow automation apps and Onit’s deep legal expertise, as represented by the millions of legal interactions processed annually, 3,000+ customers, and $47B of legal spend data, is unique in the legal technology landscape. Onit Launches Integrated Task Management in Its SimpleLegal Product Line to Elevate Collaboration and Efficiency in Matter Management

Agile new feature helps legal teams reduce risk, meet deadlines and manage stakeholder demands across dynamic legal workflows

HOUSTON (June 21, 2023) — Onit, the leading provider of legal workflow solutions, today announced a new task management feature in its SimpleLegal product line that provides a centralized solution for streamlining matter management processes, tracking deadlines and prioritizing matters and workloads.

Task management also integrates with e-Billing and spend management, marking a significant step in the SimpleLegal line’s delivery of a robust matter management offering for mid-market and enterprise organizations seeking to establish efficient legal operations. By integrating task management with matter management in a centralized system that tracks and manages legal spend, SimpleLegal addresses age-old issues associated with the lack of integration between existing task management systems and the department’s technology stack, including siloed data, low user adoption rates and poor return on investment (ROI).

SimpleLegal’s combined view of critical data ensures relevant stakeholders stay informed of a matter’s progress and impact on the business. In addition, task management offers insight into associated spend, assigned parties, altered priorities and changed due dates — providing the legal department with historical data that enables both operational and cost efficiency.

Increasing Efficiency and Driving Collaboration with Task Management

Attorneys and legal teams often struggle to prioritize multiple deadlines for matters, leading to missed deadlines, dissatisfied clients and potential legal issues. New findings from Onit’s 2023 Enterprise Legal Reputation (ELR) Report reveal that despite Legal’s enduring image as a trustworthy protector of the business, just two in five (41%) employees in the United States and Europe view Legal as efficient. Additionally, only one in four (27%) consider Legal a good business partner, citing concerns about responsiveness, communication and efficiency.

“SimpleLegal’s task management helps legal teams improve efficiency and productivity by making it easy to organize, assign and follow through on all demands and matter-related tasks,” said Shri Iyer, SimpleLegal’s Senior Vice President of Product and Design. “Customers appreciate that SimpleLegal’s task management feature is easy to use and acknowledge it as the most capable task management solution for in-house legal professionals they’ve seen.”

Task management is available for all SimpleLegal customers and included in new matter management product plans.

Onit Bolsters Portfolio of Legal Workflow Solutions That Help Modernize Legal Departments by Automating Business Critical Processes

New product developments for managing matters, spend and contracts highlight company’s dedication to the transformation of the legal department into a strategic business partner

HOUSTON, May 16, 2023 — Onit, a leading provider of legal workflow solutions including enterprise legal management (ELM) and contract lifecycle management (CLM), today announced a range of new product developments that help corporate legal departments optimize their material impact and evolve into more modern and interactive business partners.

The product developments for ELM and CLM highlight Onit’s dedication to enabling more efficient and cost-effective legal workflows for customers. Since acquiring SecureDocs in December 2021, the most recent of six acquisitions in a span of three years, the company has been hyper-focused on integrating its subsidiaries and technologies to provide the most comprehensive portfolio of ELM and CLM solutions on the market. In March 2023, Onit announced several updates to its offering, including the launch of the OnitX platform and Onit Catalyst portfolio and new integrations to its spend and matter management solutions — all of which stem from the strategic acquisitions of Bodhala in August 2021, BusyLamp in September 2021 and McCarthyFinch in November 2020.

A Comprehensive Portfolio of Legal Solutions That Meet You Where You Work

With solutions designed for medium and large enterprises, Onit enables legal departments of all sizes to modernize workflows, improve operational and cost efficiency and contribute to faster revenue generation and business growth. The following features and capabilities will be demoed by request and at CLOC Global Institute 2023 in Las Vegas:

  • Clause Creator AI: ContractWorks (a product of SecureDocs) launched Clause Creator AI, enabling users to easily create new clauses in full legalese and save them to a clause library for future use in a few clicks. Clause Creator AI reduces the time attorneys spend drafting clauses from scratch and helps non-legal users draft clauses that require less effort to review.
  • Task Management: SimpleLegal’s Task Management bolsters the company’s matter management solution by enabling legal teams to monitor a matter’s tasks through the various stages of its lifecycle. With all matter-related affairs in a single location, Task Management makes it easy for users to meet deadlines, ensure appropriate coverage, share progress and evaluate success. Task Management will be available later in 2023.
  • Interactive Analytics: The OnitX platform now provides Matter Suite Best Practice Value Dashboard with interactive analytics that produce action-oriented summaries about legal matters and spending over time. The customizable dashboard also provides broader insights by integrating with other data sources, like HR or ERP data. More dashboards will be introduced later in 2023.
  • Enhanced Reporting: SimpleLegal’s (acquired by Onit in May 2019) Enhanced Reporting, the fastest-adopted feature in SimpleLegal’s history, strengthened its offering with new datasets for invoice-level spend and reports for timekeepers rate requests and predicted versus actual spend. Enhanced Reporting’s data visualizations and report customization capabilities make it easy for legal teams to make more informed, data-driven decisions and gain a deeper understanding of their legal spend, matters and outside counsel performance.

Legal’s Path Forward: A Strategic Partner and Material Business Driver

Amid a challenging economic climate, the legal department can evolve beyond business protector and into the role of strategic partner and material business driver by becoming more modern and efficient. Data from the 2023 Enterprise Legal Reputation (ELR) Report reveals the quality of interactions between Legal and its internal clients has noticeably decreased year over year across every enterprise function — and that legal professionals are acutely aware that concerns around their responsiveness, communication and efficiency are impacting their working relationships.

However, there are roadblocks hindering Legal’s ability to be a faster, smarter and more modern partner. Nearly four in 10 (37%) legal respondents believe a lack of budget for modern solutions is holding them back from providing positive experiences for internal clients, while a similar percentage (36%) cites a lack of technology solutions.

“Our mission at Onit has never wavered — it’s always been our goal to provide enterprises with technology that automates business-critical legal workflows and helps transform corporate legal departments into business-driving strategic partners,” said Eric Elfman, Onit’s CEO. “By building the most comprehensive and sophisticated solutions for ELM and CLM, we are empowering legal professionals to positively impact materiality, increase efficiency and better collaborate with their internal clients.”
